ICS Triplex T3480 Regent Guarded Analog Output Module

The T3480 is a six-channel 4–20 mA guarded analog output module for the ICS Regent system. Dual conversion paths, triplicated I/O Safetybus communication and continuous circuit comparison help prevent a single internal or system fault from changing an output unintentionally.

GUARDED OUTPUT OPERATION

Regent processors send triplicated commands over the I/O Safetybus. Two independent logic sections vote the data and drive separate D/A paths for every channel. One path drives the field output and the other provides a reference; both signals must agree before the output is enabled.
For fault-tolerant service, two T3480 modules are wired in parallel with STATUS IN and STATUS OUT cross-strapped. One controls the loads while the standby module tests its drive circuits. Transfer to the standby module occurs in less than 5 ms after a controlling-module failure.

SYSTEM, CONFIGURATION AND WIRING
  • System: ICS Regent I/O chassis with triplicated I/O Safetybus.
  • Software: WINTERPRET I/O Configuration Editor.
  • Programming: 0–4095 corresponds to 4–20 mA. Engineering units can be converted with the analog scaling function block.
  • Slot keying: upper connector position 9 and lower connector position 10.
  • Fault response: the chassis fault-mode jumper selects shutdown-to-zero or hold-last-state behavior.
BEFORE INSTALLATION
  1. Confirm the catalog number, hardware revision and Regent compatibility.
  2. Verify the external 24 VDC supply and available current.
  3. Connect every output to a load. Short the two terminals of each unused channel at the I/O chassis as specified in the manual.
  4. For a redundant pair, verify parallel output wiring and A/B status cross-strapping.
  5. Confirm slot keying, fault-mode jumper position and WINTERPRET point definitions.
SAFETY AND MAINTENANCE

The T3480 is TÜV certified as non-interfering and is intended for non-safety-critical outputs within a safety system. Process safety must not depend on this module. Annual recalibration is recommended. Calibration and latent-fault testing require an operational Regent system, WINTERPRET, precision loads and the T3322 I/O module extender.

FAQ
Why can an unused channel cause a module fault?
Diagnostics expect every channel to see a load. An open unused channel causes the output comparison test to fail. Short its terminals as specified in the manual.
What happens if field wiring opens during redundant operation?
The controlling module detects a failure and enters standby. The second module attempts to take control, but the open field loop must still be repaired.
How should application logic handle a redundant pair?
Calculate and scale the value once, then copy the same 0–4095 value to the corresponding output on the second module.
Can T3480 be calibrated without a Regent chassis?
No. The official procedure requires an operational Regent I/O chassis, the T3322 extender and WINTERPRET.
