The Field Control Processor 280 (FCP280) is a distributed, optionally fault-tolerant, field-mounted controller module. It is designed to perform regulatory, logic, timing, and sequential control together with connected Fieldbus Modules, while also handling data acquisition and alarm detection and notification. The FCP280 requires Foxboro Evo™ Control Core Services software v9.0 or later; a system configured with the FCP280 and this software is officially referred to as a Foxboro Evo Process Automation System.


The FCP280 connects to the control network via standard fiber optic or copper 100 Mbps Ethernet cables from network adapters installed on its baseplate. For critical applications, the fault-tolerant version of the FCP280 consists of two processor modules. These modules are installed in adjacent FCP280 slots in dedicated baseplates to ensure high-speed communication between the modules.


Regarding field connectivity, the FCP280 accepts four PIO channels (four separate HDLC fieldbuses) via the four Fieldbus ports on its baseplate, which are referred to collectively as the “Expanded fieldbus.” An optional dual cable baseplate is also available that supports four PIO channels; this configuration provides separate A versus B bus connectors along with dedicated connectors for the optional Time Strobe inputs.

Control & Processing Power

Comprehensive Control: Performs regulatory, logic, timing, and sequential control together with connected Fieldbus Modules (FBMs). Also handles data acquisition, alarm detection, and notification.

Versatile Algorithms: Uses versatile control algorithms and a wide variety of FBMs to provide capabilities for a broad range of process applications.

Self-Reliant: Supports self-hosting mode, allowing the FCP280 to boot with a valid control database even without its host workstation being on-line.

Time Sync: Supports time synchronization using optional external time from GPS satellites.


Connectivity & Expansion

Massive Capacity: Supports up to 128 Compact or standard 200 Series FBMs, 128 100 Series FBMs, or a combination. (Max 64 100 Series FBMs per PIO bus/port).

Streamlined Architecture: No Fieldbus Communication Module is required. Furthermore, no Fieldbus Expansion Module is required for Expanded fieldbus support.

Network Interface: Connects to The Foxboro Evo Control Network via standard fiber optic or copper 100 Mbps Ethernet cables.

Bus Flexibility: Each Fieldbus port supports either a 2 Mbps or 268 Kbps HDLC fieldbus exclusively. The optional dual cable baseplate enables separate cables for each “A” and “B” bus.

Fault Tolerance: Offers unique, patented, fault-tolerant operation using two control modules to greatly improve reliability.

Non-Stop Updates: Offers on-line image upgrade (OLUG) of a fault-tolerant FCP280 without shutting down the process.

Rugged Build: Die cast aluminum housing suitable for Class G3 harsh environments and non-vented field enclosures (CE certified).

User Interface: LCD displays letterbug and real-time roles/statuses. Uses soft letterbugs configurable via faceplate keys.

All Compact and standard 200 Series FBMs are supported. These handle intelligent field devices across FOUNDATION fieldbus, PROFIBUS, HART, and DeviceNet networks.
