APPLICATION CONTEXT

Application & Failure Scenarios

PRIMARY APPLICATION

Turbine Differential Expansion

During turbine startup, shutdown and changing operating conditions, the rotor and casing may expand at different rates. Differential-expansion monitoring measures their relative movement to help operators assess machine movement against operating limits.

UNSTABLE OR UNEXPECTED READINGS

Check the measurement path, including probe condition, extension-cable connections, sensor power, field wiring and monitor input. Also consider target condition, installation gap and system compatibility.

REPLACEMENT OR RETROFIT

Confirm the full part number, probe and extension-cable arrangement, electrical length, mounting requirements and applicable approvals. Similar housing or connectors do not establish interchangeability.

ENGINEERING REFERENCE

Technical Specifications

Published system-level characteristics for the 3300 XL 25 mm proximity transducer system. Values depend on test conditions and component configuration.

MEASUREMENT PRINCIPLE
Non-contact measurement
Senses the position of a conductive target without physical contact.
LINEAR MEASUREMENT RANGE
12.7 mm
500 mils · 3300 XL 25 mm system

RANGE REFERENCE ONLY — NOT A LIVE READING
AVERAGE SCALE FACTOR
0.787 V/mm
20 mV/mil nominal
POWER SUPPLY · WITHOUT BARRIERS
−17.5 to −26 Vdc
Maximum current consumption: 12 mA. With barriers, the stated supply range is −23 to −26 Vdc.
FREQUENCY RESPONSE
0 to 2.7 kHz
Typical response of +0 / −3 dB, with field wiring up to 305 m (1,000 ft).
RECOMMENDED MINIMUM FLAT TARGET
61 mm diameter
Target size used for the system specification reference.
FIELD WIRING
0.2–1.5 mm² · 16–24 AWG
A three-conductor shielded triad cable is recommended; ferrule requirements may narrow the applicable conductor range.
Measurement conditions

Published system performance is based on specified target material, target size, probe gap, load and component temperatures. Calibration to another target material may affect accuracy and interchangeability. Confirm the installed configuration before using these values for engineering decisions.

SYSTEM DESIGN NOTES

How the Measurement Channel Works

01 / PROBE
Senses target movement

Responds to changes in the gap between the probe tip and conductive target. Correct installation geometry is essential.

02 / EXTENSION CABLE
Maintains electrical length

Must match the probe and sensor arrangement. A mismatch can change the electrical characteristics of the channel.

03 / PROXIMITOR SENSOR
Converts the probe response

Works with the matched probe and extension cable to provide a signal for the monitoring equipment.

04 / MONITOR
Interprets channel output

Monitor configuration, wiring and alarm settings matter when a signal disagrees with expected machine movement.

Installation & Troubleshooting Checklist BEFORE COMMISSIONING · Select to expand
Component matching

Verify the probe, extension cable and Proximitor Sensor are intended to operate together as a compatible 3300 XL 25 mm system.

Probe gap and target

Check installation gap, target surface and alignment against the requirements of the installed measurement arrangement.

Cable and connectors

Inspect connector condition, contamination, cable routing, shielding and wiring termination. Avoid bending the cable below the specified minimum bend radius.

Power and monitoring input

Verify sensor supply, barrier arrangement where applicable, field wiring and monitor input settings before replacing a component.

Approval and mounting requirements

Confirm the selected configuration is suitable for the installation area and required mounting method.

TECHNICAL REFERENCE

330850-51-00 Datasheet / Manual

For technical evaluation, check the 3300 XL 25 mm Proximity Transducer System specifications for measurement range, electrical requirements, operating environment and component compatibility. Confirm the exact order code and approval requirements against the installed unit before ordering.

QUICK ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

01 / What does differential-expansion monitoring measure?

It measures relative movement associated with differences in thermal growth between a turbine rotor and its casing. The transducer arrangement depends on the target geometry and required measurement range.

02 / Can one component be replaced while keeping the other system components?

Do not assume that a single-component replacement is compatible based on appearance alone. Check the complete probe, cable and sensor combination before installation.

03 / What information helps identify a suitable replacement?

Provide the full part number, installed component details, mounting arrangement and application requirements. Include the machine or system model where possible.

04 / What should be included in a quotation request?

Include the part number, quantity, destination, required date and machine/system model so the enquiry can be reviewed accurately.
