Application & Failure Scenarios
The SB301 is used for ESB bus communication between a field control unit and connected node units in the applicable Yokogawa control-system configuration. It may be investigated when ESB communication is interrupted or an interface-card fault is suspected.
In a dual-redundant arrangement, the active and standby SB301 cards are managed by the active CPU. If an abnormality is detected on one ESB bus, communication can use the other bus.

Additional Technical Notes
The SB301 is an ESB bus interface card used in Yokogawa control systems. In the CENTUM CS 3000 compact control station design, SB301 and CP345 hardware were integrated into a single processor module to reduce module size while maintaining software compatibility as much as possible. The compact module design uses a molded housing, fine-pitch BGA devices, 1005-size chip capacitors and resistors, and high-density build-up boards.
Replacement & Compatibility Checks
- Redundancy: Yokogawa documents a configuration using two SB301 cards in the field control unit for dual-redundant ESB communication.
- Active/standby operation: The active CPU manages the cards' states. The active SB301 acts as the ESB bus master; the other card remains on standby.
- Bus switchover: The redundant ESB buses are used alternately. If one bus is detected as abnormal, communication switches to the other.
