ABB IMSPM01 Serial Port Module

The ABB Bailey IMSPM01 is a Serial Port Module (SPM) for the INFI 90 Process Control System. It provides a computer interface to modules installed in an INFI 90 Process Control Unit (PCU). The module supports computer-based configuration, tuning, status monitoring and data transfer.

The IMSPM01 connects a computer or Engineering Work Station to the INFI 90 module bus. The SPM can access up to 31 modules connected to the module bus and supports communication between the computer and individual PCU modules.

The computer interface uses full-duplex EIA RS-232C communication. Two serial ports are provided for computer, modem and diagnostic functions. The documented termination hardware includes:

  • NTCU01 Termination Unit
  • NKTU01 Termination Unit Cable

The connected computer or modem should be powered down before disconnecting the RS-232C cable.

The SPM performs startup checks after initialization or reset, including ROM and RAM tests. For troubleshooting, the manufacturer provides two specific procedures:

  • RS-232C Echo Test - Used to check the serial-port communication path
  • Module Bus Checkout - Used to check communication between the SPM and modules on the module bus

Field Testing Note: For an IMSPM01 serial communication problem, the manufacturer provides an RS-232C Echo Test as a diagnostic procedure for checking the serial-port interface.
