Compatibility & Replacement

01

Original-System Compatibility

Designed for Symphony Plus Harmony Rack turbine-control applications. ABB states compatibility with BRC300, BRC400 and BRC410 controllers at the documented firmware levels, and use with the existing NKHS03 cable and NTHS03 termination. SPTPS13 speed detection is commonly used with it in governor applications.

02

Historical Replacement

ABB identifies SPHSS13 as the direct replacement for IMHSS03, IMHSS04, IMHSS05, SPHSS03, SPHSS04 and SPHSS05. Revision, controller firmware, function-code database, LVDT type and servo-current selection must still be checked before installation.

04

Applications & Fault Scenarios

  • Steam-turbine throttle and control valves, gas-turbine fuel valves, inlet guide vanes and nozzle-angle positioning.
  • Fast PI or proportional-only hydraulic positioning with AC or DC LVDT feedback.
  • Reporting a non-modulating valve position without control, covering the documented SPLPS01-type function.
  • Maintenance searches commonly involve LVDT mismatch, feedback calibration, servo-coil open/short, controller firmware, hard-manual transfer or actuator instability.
  • A failed servo loop may force manual control, prevent turbine startup or cause an unplanned trip, so firmware and loop commissioning checks are part of replacement planning.
05

Redundancy & Control

  • Two servo outputs may be used as active outputs or active/standby; output protection isolates a short or open on one channel from the other.
  • Automatic feedback and demodulator calibration, active current limiting and self-resetting fuses are documented enhancements.
  • FC55 supports the documented control modes; verify the installed controller firmware and database before commissioning.
06

Configuration & Installation

  • ABB documents use of the existing NKHS03 cable and NTHS03 termination for the replacement path.
  • Confirm AC or DC LVDT topology, excitation, polarity, servo/IH current range, hard-manual contacts and valve travel before hot swap or outage work.
  • Hot-swap capability does not remove the need for an approved turbine-control procedure and a controlled valve-stroke test.
07

Diagnostics & Maintenance

  • Use the module's feedback, test and position-meter signals to separate an electronic problem from actuator, LVDT or field-wiring faults.
  • Check controller compatibility, function-code status and output current selection before replacing hardware.
  • Keep the module static-safe and clean, inspect cable/termination integrity and retain commissioning records for subsequent loop comparison.
08

Associated Hardware

  • BRC300/BRC400/BRC410 controller at ABB-documented firmware levels.
  • NKHS03 cable and NTHS03 termination.
  • SPTPS13 speed detection module in typical governor applications.

FAQ

01How should SPHSS13 be installed?
Confirm controller firmware, FC55 configuration, NKHS03/NTHS03 hardware, LVDT type, current range and valve calibration. Use an approved turbine procedure and complete a controlled travel test before releasing the loop.
02Which legacy modules can SPHSS13 replace?
ABB identifies IMHSS03, IMHSS04, IMHSS05, SPHSS03, SPHSS04 and SPHSS05. Revision-specific LVDT arrangements, firmware and configuration must still be verified.
03What should be configured on SPHSS13?
Set the required control mode, LVDT excitation and polarity, servo or I/H output, redundant-output behavior, hard-manual contacts and actuator travel parameters to match the original loop design.
04How should SPHSS13 be maintained and protected from ESD?
Use grounded ESD controls and antistatic storage. Keep cable and termination connections clean, compare feedback and test outputs during troubleshooting, and retain the commissioned valve-stroke records.
05What delivery and warranty support is available for SPHSS13?
Each unit is function-checked where suitable test facilities are available and packed in an antistatic bag with protective cushioning. DOA, return and exchange requests are handled under the written order terms after evidence and technical evaluation. Warranty covers confirmed supply defects during the agreed period, excluding misuse, incorrect installation, ESD damage, improper storage and unauthorized repair.
06What information is needed for an SPHSS13 RFQ?
Please provide the Part Number, Quantity, Destination, Required Date and Machine/System Model. The legacy module, controller firmware, termination, LVDT type and output-current range help confirm the correct supply.

Technical statements are limited to verified ABB/Bailey manufacturer documentation. Installation must follow the plant safety procedure and the documentation for the installed system revision.
