It is mainly applied in shaft vibration monitoring, axial (thrust) position measurement, and shaft speed detection using Keyphasor signals.

Typical Equipment:
In practice, it’s commonly installed on critical rotating equipment such as steam turbines, gas turbines, centrifugal compressors, and large electric motors.

Operating Principle:
The system is based on eddy current sensing. As the probe gets closer or farther from the shaft surface (typically AISI 4140 steel), the output voltage changes accordingly. In real use, this gap change is what drives the signal response.

In normal setup, the probe gap voltage is around -10 V DC, usually staying within -9 to -11 V.

As the gap increases, the voltage shifts more negative. When the gap closes, it moves back toward the reference level.

On top of this steady DC signal, vibration shows up as an AC component. Together, they give both shaft position and vibration information. With a Keyphasor signal, phase reference can also be obtained.

A slow shift in DC level often points to mechanical or thermal changes, such as shaft growth, misalignment, or installation variation.

AC signal changes usually relate to vibration issues like imbalance or looseness. If the signal drifts gradually over time, it is often caused by installation conditions, probe contamination, or temperature influence.

What is the recommended gap voltage?
Typically -9 V to -11 V DC during correct setup.


Can the probe operate in high-temperature environments?
Standard probe works up to 177 °C (350 °F). For higher temperatures, the ETR version supports up to 260 °C (500 °F).


Are the components interchangeable?
Yes. Probes, extension cables, and Proximitor® modules are interchangeable within the 3300 XL system.


How can cross-talk be avoided during installation?

For small shafts under 50 mm, keep spacing around 40 mm for axial probes and about 74 mm for radial positions.
