Product Description
Siemens 6SE6440-2UD31-1CA1 MICROMASTER 440 AC Drive
Siemens 6SE6440-2UD31-1CA1 MICROMASTER 440 AC Drive with 3 AC Phases 380-480V Line Voltage 0
The MICROMASTER 440 series comprises a range of frequency inverters designed to control the speed of three-phase AC motors. The available models cover a wide spectrum, from the 120 W single-phase input to the 75 kW three-phase input, providing flexibility for various applications.
These inverters are microprocessor-controlled and utilize advanced Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) technology, making them both reliable and versatile. A special pulse-width modulation method with selectable pulse frequency ensures quiet motor operation, while comprehensive protective functions offer excellent inverter and motor protection.
With its default factory settings, the MICROMASTER 440 is ideal for a broad range of simple motor control tasks. At the same time, it can handle more advanced motor control applications through its comprehensive functionality. The MICROMASTER 440 can be used in both stand-alone applications and fully integrated into automation systems.

Technical Features & Application Insights
Power Scaling: What is the actual range for these frames?
The MM440 covers everything from small 120W (single-phase) drives to 75kW (three-phase) industrial units. The real advantage here is the shared firmware; you don't need different software to parameterize a tiny 120W fan drive versus a 75kW extruder. The logic remains consistent across all Frame Sizes (FSA to FSF).
IGBT Gating: Why use a microprocessor to drive the bridge?
The Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) are switched via high-speed microprocessor pulses. This isn't just for speed; it's about waveform precision. It allows the drive to synthesize a cleaner AC output with fewer harmonics, which stops the motor from "cooking" due to eddy current losses that you see in cheaper, non-intelligent drives.
Pulse Frequency: How to handle high-frequency motor noise?
If the motor is "singing" or whistling at a specific speed, you adjust the selectable pulse frequency (PWM). Increasing the carrier frequency moves the noise out of the audible range. However, there's a hardware tax: higher switching frequencies generate more heat in the drive's heat sink, so you may have to derate the output current if you're in a hot enclosure.
Commissioning: Can I bypass the full parameter tree for basic loads?
Yes. For standard pumps or centrifugal fans, you just use the Quick Commissioning mode (P0010=1). Once you dump the motor nameplate data (Voltage, Current, CosPhi) into the drive, the internal factory macros handle the V/f curve. You only touch the deep BICO (Binary Connector) logic if you're doing custom I/O or complex interlocking.
Network Logic: How does this integrate into a PLC rack?
While it works fine as a standalone "dumb" drive using terminal strips, it's designed for integrated automation. Stick a PROFIBUS or PROFINET module on the front, and the drive becomes an I/O node. You can pull live torque data, DC-link voltage, and fault codes (like F0001 or F0002) directly into your PLC code for real-time monitoring.
The Braking Issue: How to stop high-inertia loads without a fault?
When you ramp down a heavy load fast, the motor generates power back into the drive, spiking the DC-link voltage. The MM440 has an integrated Brake Chopper (check your frame size for compatibility). It dumps that excess "regen" energy into an external resistor, preventing the drive from tripping on an F0002 (Overvoltage) fault.
Phase Bridge: Running 3-phase motors on a 1-phase wall socket?
The 120W (and other low-power) models are "Phase Converters." They rectify the single-phase 230V input into a internal DC bus, then the IGBTs recreate a balanced three-phase output. It's the standard way to run industrial-spec motors in shops where you only have single-phase residential power.
Control Modes: When do I flip from V/f to Vector?
Use V/f for simple fans. But if you need full torque at zero speed or precision speed holding under fluctuating loads, you enable Sensorless Vector Control. The microprocessor calculates a mathematical model of the motor's magnetic flux in real-time. It gives you "stiffer" control and prevents stalling during heavy torque hits without needing an expensive encoder.
