Product Description
The Valve and Case Expansion Monitor is engineered for high reliability and is specifically designed for the plant's most critical rotating machinery. This compact 1-slot module integrates seamlessly with other AMS 6500 monitors to create a comprehensive API 670 machinery protection system. Its primary function is to precisely monitor valve position and case expansion, protecting machinery by comparing measured values against alarm setpoints that trigger alarms and relay outputs.
Valve position refers to the main steam inlet valve stem position, typically displayed as a percentage of valve opening. This measurement enables operators to accurately assess the current load on the turbine. Case expansion monitoring typically employs two inductive displacement sensors or LVDTs mounted axially on opposite sides of the turbine case. Unlike non-contact eddy-current probes, inductive sensors are contact-type devices that measure movement directly.
Monitoring case expansion is particularly crucial during turbine start-up. Both sides of the turbine case must expand freely and at appropriate rates. Since the turbine slides on rails as it heats and expands, restricted movement on one side can cause the turbine case to bend or "crab," potentially leading to rotor contact with the case. Proper case expansion monitoring helps prevent this type of damage by ensuring symmetrical movement during operation.
