POINT I/O 24V DC Expansion Power Supply

An expansion power supply for Allen-Bradley POINT I/O assemblies, providing an additional field-power segment within a compatible remote I/O installation.

01 / FUNCTION

Module Role & System Context

This module sits within a POINT I/O assembly to extend field-power distribution and support the power requirements of a downstream I/O segment.

It is intended for use with POINT I/O adapters. It is not a general-purpose standalone DC power supply.

Compatibility: Verify the installed POINT I/O adapter, terminal base, surrounding modules and system power budget. Do not connect the module to 120/240V AC.

  • Inrush current: 6 A maximum for 10 ms.
  • POINTBus output, horizontal mounting: 1 A at 10–19.2V input; 1.3 A at 19.2–28.8V input.
  • POINTBus output, vertical mounting: 1 A at 10–28.8V input.
  • Status indicators: Green field-power indicator and green 5V system-power indicator.
  • Input protection: Reverse-polarity protected.
  • Input interruption: Output voltage remains within specification for a 10 ms input dropout at 10V under maximum load.
  • Terminal-base screw torque: 0.6 N·m (7 lb·in).
  • Approximate weight: 120 g.
  • Mounting: Horizontal or vertical, subject to the applicable current ratings and derating requirements.
  • Enclosure: Open-type equipment for indoor use; install in a suitably rated enclosure.
  • Grounding: Grounding through the DIN rail to chassis ground, following the manufacturer's rail, fastening and grounding requirements.
  • Assembly position: Installed between I/O modules; the field-power bus is interrupted at the expansion supply.
03 / TROUBLESHOOTING

Application & Failure Scenarios

Relevant to maintenance and expansion of remote POINT I/O assemblies that require a separate field-power segment.

Field-power indicator is off

Check the incoming DC supply, terminal connections and field-power circuit before determining whether the module is defective.

Intermittent I/O or power faults

Inspect supply voltage under load, wiring, grounding and the current demand of the connected modules.

Machine or production-line interruption

A failed power-extension segment may affect the associated I/O devices. The actual downtime impact depends on the machine and control-system design.

04 / FIELD INSTALLATION

Installation & Wiring

Assembly position

Follow the manufacturer's installation sequence. The adjacent module must be removed to install or remove the expansion power supply.

Terminal identification

Use the official wiring diagram to confirm the NC, chassis-ground, common and supply terminal positions.

Power isolation

Remove power before connecting or disconnecting field wiring. Follow site electrical procedures and applicable hazardous-location requirements.

07 / FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the 1734-EP24DC used for?

It is a 24V DC expansion power supply for the Allen-Bradley POINT I/O platform, providing a field-power extension within a compatible assembly.

2. Can this module be used with any I/O adapter?

No. It is intended for POINT I/O adapters. Confirm the installed adapter and assembly configuration before ordering.

3. What input voltage is required?

The nominal input is 24V DC, with a documented range of 10–28.8V DC. AC mains voltage must not be connected.

4. Does an unlit power indicator prove that the module has failed?

No. Check the incoming supply, terminal wiring and power distribution first. An unlit indicator alone does not establish the cause.

5. What information is needed for a replacement quotation?

Provide the part number, quantity, destination, required date and machine/system model. An identification photo and the installed adapter details can also help confirm the requested configuration.
