1746-OW16 Relay Output Module

Allen-Bradley SLC 500 · 16-Point AC/DC Relay Output

Discontinued product · Legacy system support

Relay switching for established SLC 500 installations.

The 1746-OW16 provides 16 relay output points for control circuits using AC or DC field power. It is relevant to maintenance teams troubleshooting switching failures or sourcing a module for an existing control cabinet.

The output load ratings are not interchangeable across voltage and load types. Check the connected load, inrush and inductive characteristics, group current, and total module loading before energizing a circuit.

Application & Failure Scenarios

  • Machine control: Relay outputs switch field devices in existing SLC 500 control systems where the connected circuit requires a relay contact rather than a transistor output.
  • Output not switching: A commanded output that fails to change state can prompt checks of the control logic, field supply, terminal wiring, relay contact path and connected load.
  • Intermittent operation: Unstable switching may interrupt a machine sequence or process step. The symptom alone does not establish whether the module, field circuit or controlled device is responsible.
  • Downtime exposure: Loss of an output channel may stop the equipment function assigned to it; the wider production impact depends on the machine's control sequence and operating conditions.

Installation & Field Wiring

  • Power isolation: Switch off chassis power before installing, removing, or wiring the module. Never remove the terminal block while the SLC 500 system is energized.
  • Chassis fitting: Align the module circuit board with the chassis card guide, slide it into position until the lower locking tabs engage, and route wiring down and away from the module, securing it neatly.
  • Terminal handling: Colored terminal blocks are removable after loosening the upper and lower retaining screws; black terminal blocks are not removable. Keep conductors and terminal hardware secure during maintenance.
  • Wiring limits: Use conductors up to 2 mm² (14 AWG), no more than two wires per terminal, and a maximum terminal torque of 0.9 N·m (8 lb-in). Terminal-block retaining screws have a maximum torque of 0.6 N·m (5.3 lb-in).
  • Noise and static control: Route field wiring carefully to reduce electrical noise. Discharge static before handling, use an approved grounding wrist strap, avoid touching pins or circuit components, and use static-safe packaging for storage.
  • Cabinet protection: Install the open-type module inside a suitable enclosure. Cover unused chassis slots with the designated slot filler to limit debris entry.

Troubleshooting Priorities

Verify the output command Check field voltage Inspect terminal connections Confirm common grouping Review load current Check contact switching and load condition

For relay-output faults, distinguish between a missing command, a field power or wiring issue, a failed load, and a relay contact that no longer switches reliably. Remove power and follow the machine's lockout procedure before inspecting terminals or conductors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the 1746-OW16 used for?

It is a 16-point relay output module in the Allen-Bradley SLC 500 family for switching AC or DC field circuits through relay contacts.

2. Is the 1746-OW16 discontinued?

Yes. Rockwell Automation lists the product as discontinued, effective November 24, 2022. Sourcing should therefore be based on the actual available item and its confirmed condition.

3. What should I check if an output stops working?

Check the controller command, field supply, terminal wiring, load condition and relay contact operation. A failed output symptom does not by itself prove that the module is defective.

4. Can another 16-point output module replace it directly?

Not necessarily. Output technology, voltage range, contact arrangement, common grouping, wiring and the controller platform must all be assessed before a replacement is selected.
