Overview

Product Introduction

NTMF01 terminates serial communication and station links for documented ABB Bailey multi-function controller and transfer-module applications. Manufacturer literature covers the IMMFC03/04/05 controller family and specified INFI-NET or Plant Loop transfer interfaces.

The board provides two independent RS-232-C channels and a separate control-station serial link through NTCS04. Application-specific dipshunts set port behavior, and the front LEDs are only active in the documented IMMFC03 application.

Compatibility & Application Limits

01

The manufacturer instruction documents NTMF01 for IMMFC03, IMMFC04 and IMMFC05 multi-function controllers.

02

It also documents applications with INICT01 INFI-NET-to-computer transfer, INPCT01 Plant-Loop-to-computer transfer and the specified Plant-Loop transfer modules in the instruction architecture.

03

The front LEDs are driven in the IMMFC03 application; ABB states that they do not light when the unit is used with IMMFC04 or IMMFC05. An unlit LED is therefore not automatically a failure.

04

No direct replacement relationship is stated. Match the controller or transfer module, cable and port configuration.

Maintenance context

Applications & Fault Scenarios

RS-232 communication loss

A host computer or transfer interface stops exchanging data and the DTE/DCE setup, cable and port path must be isolated.

Misleading LED state

A technician sees dark indicators in an IMMFC04/05 application and needs to distinguish normal behavior from loss of +24 V power.

Station link failure

Control-station communication is absent while both RS-232 ports continue operating, focusing checks on NTCS04 and the station serial path.

Intermittent cabinet fault

Loose fastons, oxidized connectors or contaminated board surfaces cause resets or sporadic serial errors.

Field practice

Port Configuration, Indication & Maintenance

Set both halves of each port

Each RS-232 port uses two dipshunts. Configure the complete application-specific pattern for DTE or DCE operation and record it before changing hardware.

Use indicators in context

Only the IMMFC03 application drives the documented LEDs. With IMMFC04 or IMMFC05, diagnose from power, signal activity and end-to-end communication rather than light state.

Separate serial and station paths

Trace the two DB-25 RS-232 circuits independently from the NTCS04 station link. A fault on one path need not implicate the others.

Maintain connections

During scheduled shutdown, inspect and tighten power and field wiring, clean the board using the approved method and replace only the specified fuse type after correcting the cause.

Product-specific answers

FAQ

Which controller modules are documented with NTMF01?

The manufacturer instruction lists IMMFC03, IMMFC04 and IMMFC05, plus specified transfer-module applications described in its system diagrams.

How many RS-232 ports does NTMF01 provide?

It provides two separate RS-232-C ports, each configured by two dipshunts, plus a separate control-station serial link.

Why are the NTMF01 LEDs dark with an IMMFC04 or IMMFC05?

ABB states that the indicators are only driven by IMMFC03. Dark LEDs in the other documented controller applications do not by themselves prove a fault.

Can NTMF01 operate as either DTE or DCE?

Yes. Use the application-specific dipshunt settings in the manufacturer instruction and verify the connected device and cable.

What maintenance is recommended for NTMF01 connections?

During a controlled shutdown, inspect cleanliness and damage, tighten power and field connections, and investigate the circuit before replacing an open fuse.

What should be provided in an NTMF01 RFQ?

Include the exact part number and revision, controller or transfer module, cable numbers, quantity, destination, required date and installed system model.
