Overview

Product Introduction

NTMP01 provides external serial and control-station termination for ABB Bailey rack-mounted controllers. Manufacturer documentation covers IMMFP01/02/03 applications, with IMMPI01/02 used where specified, and identifies additional interface applications for INIIT02 and INICT03.

The assembly supports two isolated RS-232-C channels, with one channel configurable as a non-isolated RS-485 connection, plus a control-station serial link. Port mode, handshaking and station wiring must be set for the connected device.

Compatibility & Connected Hardware

01

The manufacturer instruction documents IMMFP01, IMMFP02 and IMMFP03; the IMMFP03 arrangement uses IMMPI01 or IMMPI02 as specified.

02

The same instruction also covers NTMP01 termination for INIIT02 and INICT03 through the appropriate IMMPI interface.

03

ABB General Purpose Interface literature lists NTMP01 + NTKU01 among peripheral hardware for documented MFP03, BRC100/200/300/400/410 and related interface arrangements. Use the exact architecture drawing for the installed controller generation.

04

No direct replacement is asserted. Cable, port electrical standard, DCE/DTE mode and station topology must match.

04

Maintenance context

Applications & Fault Scenarios

Serial device offline

A printer, computer or event recorder no longer communicates and the port mode, cable or isolated interface path must be checked.

DCE/DTE mismatch

A new peripheral is connected but transmit and receive activity is absent because both ends use an incompatible port role.

RS-485 migration

One channel is being changed from RS-232 to the documented non-isolated RS-485 mode and needs a complete wiring and grounding review.

Redundant controller service

Primary and backup path indication does not follow controller status, prompting checks of cable seating and the paired processor arrangement.

05

Field practice

Serial Port Setup & Station Integration

Define each port before wiring

Record the peripheral, protocol, RS-232 or RS-485 electrical standard, DCE/DTE role and handshake requirement. Configure jumpers from the correct manufacturer table.

Respect isolation boundaries

The two RS-232 channels are isolated; the documented RS-485 option is non-isolated. Review grounding and common-mode conditions before conversion.

Check the controller path

Inspect the NKTU cable, IMMPI interface where used and primary/redundant connections. Use the two LEDs as path indicators, not as a substitute for end-to-end communication testing.

Commission at the application layer

After physical checks, verify port settings in the controller and peripheral, then prove message transfer or print/event output under normal operating conditions.

Product-specific answers

FAQ

Which serial interfaces are available on NTMP01?

It supports two isolated RS-232-C channels, with one channel configurable instead as a non-isolated RS-485 interface, plus a control-station serial link.

Can NTMP01 be configured as DCE or DTE?

Yes. The manufacturer instruction documents DCE, DTE, non-handshake and loopback arrangements. Use the jumper table for the required port and hardware revision.

Which controller modules are documented with NTMP01?

The instruction covers IMMFP01/02/03, including the specified IMMPI interface arrangements, and also documents INIIT02 and INICT03 applications.

What do the two NTMP01 LEDs indicate?

They identify active primary and redundant controller paths in the documented arrangement. End-to-end serial communication still needs a functional test.

Is the NTMP01 RS-485 interface isolated?

No. ABB documentation distinguishes the isolated RS-232 channels from the non-isolated RS-485 option, so grounding must be reviewed.

What information helps quote NTMP01 correctly?

Provide the controller and interface module, cable part number, required serial standard, board revision, quantity, destination and required date.
