Allen Bradley 1746-NO4I Analog Output Module
The Allen-Bradley 1746-NO4I is a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) analog output module designed for the SLC 500 product platform. Compatible with both fixed and modular hardware controller variants, this module delivers output current in the 0 to 20 mA range for driving modulating instruments and control devices.
When integrated with Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers, the analog output represents the Control Output (CO), while manual loading stations use it for operator commands. The module also enables signal retransmission to multiple devices for indication, data logging, and signal conversion purposes.
The 1746-NO4I features an embedded selector switch for choosing between internal backplane power or an external 24 ±10% VDC supply. This four-channel analog output module utilizes 16-bit 2's complement binary format with current outputs ranging from 0 to +20 mA and full-scale current of 21 mA.

What's the deal with the selector switch on the side?
That switch lets you choose between using the SLC backplane power or an external 24V DC supply. If your rack's power supply is overloaded, switch to external and wire up a dedicated 24V DC source to prevent glitches.
Why does the spec say 21mA if it's a 0-20mA card?
The module includes a 5% over-range capacity that allows it to reach 21mA. This provides flexibility for calibrating valves or checking signal integrity at the high end.
Is the conversion speed fast enough for my PID loops?

What kind of wire should I use?
