The Shaft Relative Vibration Monitor is engineered for exceptional reliability and is designed for the most critical rotating equipment in industrial plants. This compact 1-slot module integrates with other AMS 6500 cards to form a complete API 670 compliant machinery protection system. It is commonly deployed on steam and gas turbines, compressors, and hydro-type turbo machines.
Primary Function
The module's primary function is to precisely measure shaft relative vibration and protect machinery by monitoring vibration levels against established alarm limits. When thresholds are exceeded, it activates alarms and relays to ensure equipment safety.
Vibration Measurement Technology
A non-contact displacement sensor is installed through the bearing case or within the bearing housing, targeting the rotating shaft. Since the sensor is fixed to the bearing, the system measures shaft movement relative to the bearing case—hence the term "shaft relative vibration."
Application Guidelines
This measurement method is particularly crucial for sleeve-bearing machines used in predictive maintenance and protection applications. It is the preferred choice when machine casings are substantially heavier than rotors and minimal vibration is expected from startup through normal operating speeds. When casing and rotor masses are more comparable—potentially causing bearing housing vibration that could affect readings—some users opt for shaft absolute vibration measurement instead.
