This minimal power consumption supports critical interface components. The 14 mA draw powers opto-isolators for the RS-232 serial port and internal ASIC logic gates. While rack logic operates on 5.1V, loss of the 24V rail due to power supply failure will immediately disable local diagnostic ports and serial communications.
