Memory Architecture & Storage
The 1756-L55M12 processor features a sophisticated memory architecture with 750 kbytes allocated for user logic and data execution, plus an additional 208 kbytes dedicated to I/O memory management. This model does not include integrated nonvolatile memory, requiring engineers to maintain consistent backplane power or implement battery-backed RAM solutions to prevent data loss during extended power interruptions.
Power Requirements & Thermal Management
For accurate power supply calculations in multi-slot chassis configurations, the module requires:
- 1.23 A at 5.1V DC (Logic circuit)
- 0.014 A at 24V DC (Auxiliary circuit)
Communication Interfaces
The processor supports multiple communication protocols including RS-232 serial interfacing using 1756-CP3 or 1747-CP3 cables (Wiring Category 2). It functions as a bridge or owner for ControlNet, EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, DH+, and Universal Remote I/O networks when paired with corresponding 1756-series communication modules in the same chassis.
High-Availability Redundancy
The 1756-L55M12 supports deployment in high-availability Hot Backup systems, though with specific topology requirements. Redundant controllers must operate within a ControlNet network to enable proper state-transfer synchronization between primary and secondary units. EtherNet/IP alone does not support native redundancy in the L55 series firmware.
