The Trusted® T8442 TMR Speed Monitor is designed to monitor the shaft speed and acceleration of rotating machinery, providing machine protection for over-speed and over-acceleration shutdown functions. Typical applications include steam and gas turbines driving pumps, compressors, and generators. Within a Trusted System, the T8442 module can also perform turbine speed control independently of machinery protection functions. System response times are critical for these applications, so the T8442 operates as a self-contained, fault-tolerant control sub-system to minimize processing delays.
Each T8442 module contains three monitoring and control groups, with each group providing the speed monitoring and shutdown control required for a single rotating machine. A single module can handle up to three turbine trains. Each rotating machine group includes three separate Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) speed input channels and two quad-redundant, fault-tolerant output drive structures. For turbines with more than three speed pickups, additional monitoring and control groups can be combined to accommodate them.
The speed input channels interface directly with the Trusted T8846 Speed Input Field Termination Assembly (SIFTA), which provides signal conditioning and field cable termination for the nine TMR speed input channels required by three rotating machine groups. Both active and passive speed probes can be used, with active probes powered through the field cable termination. Shutdown control outputs interface with the Trusted T8891 Speed Output Field Termination Assemblies (SOFTA), each containing two quad-redundant, fault-tolerant, volt-free contact structures for a single rotating machine group. Connections between the module and the field termination assemblies are made using a Trusted TC-801 Cable Assembly.

The T8442 system ensures uninterrupted speed monitoring and output control even under critical failure conditions, including complete failure of Trusted System Processors and complete failure of any or all communication links between the T8442 and the Trusted System Processors.
Safety Strategies and Operating Rules
  • Operating parameters for the T8442 are downloaded from the Trusted System Processors during system or module initialization (start-up)
  • Safety parameters for a speed input group cannot be changed while any input in that group is above zero speed
  • Over-speed and over-acceleration shutdown parameters are downloaded from the Trusted System Processors on module initialization
  • Threshold limits for over-speed or over-acceleration cannot exceed the safety limits passed at initialization; parameters may only be adjusted in a safe direction using the IEC 61131 TOOLSET
  • A standby T8442 module is programmed with operating parameters from the active module before on-line replacement via the Trusted System Companion Slot method
  • Over-speed test mode is controlled by a configurable timer
  • Any group-specific configuration parameters can only be changed when the group is at zero speed
  • The module maintains its safety case independently while the turbine is running and cannot be affected by the Trusted System Processor in any way
