FOXBORO FBM231 Redundant Field Device System Integrator (FDSI) Modules
The FBM231 Redundant Field Device System Integrator (FDSI) modules provide a serial interface between dual-ported field I/O devices and the EcoStruxure™ Foxboro™ DCS system. A pair of FBM231 modules combine to provide redundancy at the Fieldbus Module (FBM) level, with field wiring to two termination assemblies. In this configuration, one FBM231 operates as the Master and the other as the Tracker module. Input points on the control station are updated from the device inputs received on the network connected to the Master, while device output points—depending on the I/O driver—are written by both the Master and Tracker. Role switching is automatic if problems are detected by the I/O driver, or the user can switch roles at any time via SMDH.
The FBM231 has four ports, each individually configurable in software for RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485. This allows a single FBM231 the flexibility to connect to multiple similar but not identical devices. Ports 1, 2, 3, and/or 4 can be configured as a single logical port with redundant cables, allowing interface with dual-ported I/O devices within the plant.

Technical Specifications
The FBM231 can communicate with up to 64 devices in RS-485 mode, handling both read and write operations. From the Foxboro DCS control station connected to the module, you can make up to 2000 Distributed Control Interface (DCI) data connections for reading or writing data. Supported data types depend on the driver loaded on the FBM231, which converts the device data into the DCI formats shown below:
- Analog input or output values (integer or IEEE single-precision floating-point)
- Single digital input or output values
- Multiple packed digital inputs or outputs (up to 32 digital points per connection)
With this setup, the FBM231 can move as many as 2000 analog I/O values, or 64,000 digital I/O values, or any mix of analog and digital values across its four ports—up to the limits allowed by the control processor's sizing guidelines. A control station can access FBM231 data as quickly as every 500 ms, though real performance depends on the device type and how its data is arranged.
Behind the scenes, the FBM231 gathers data from the field devices, converts it as needed, and stores the results in its internal database. From there, the information flows into Foxboro DCS plant management functions and operator displays. The system can also send data back out to the devices when needed.
