Product Description
The digital input module consists of a single printed circuit board that occupies one slot in a module mounting unit. It monitors two separate groups of eight digital inputs. Twelve inputs are isolated from each other, while the remaining two pairs share common positive input lines.
Two captive screws on the module faceplate secure it to the module mounting unit. Sixteen front-panel LED status indicators (group A and group B) display the input status and assist in system testing and diagnosis.
The digital input module has three card-edge connectors for external signals and power (P1, P2, and P3). P1 connects to common (ground) and +5 VDC power. P2 connects the module to the I/O expander bus for communication with a controller. P3 receives the digital signals through a cable connected to a termination unit, where the terminal blocks for field wiring are located.
Input Isolation
The input isolation block contains current limiters and optocouplers that isolate the 16 field inputs from the module circuitry. The input circuits provide 1500 VDC isolation between the input and logic circuitry, as well as between individual input channels. (Refer to Table 1-4 for additional specifications.)
Digital input high-impedance adds passive protection against high-energy transients on field digital inputs. The input signal path and low isolation capacitance help protect against fast transient-burst disturbances.
Threshold Detection
The threshold detection block tests each input voltage to determine whether it is at the correct level to indicate an on or off state. The output from this comparator is sent to a read buffer in the control logic block. When an input is energized, the corresponding front-panel status LED lights to show its active state.
Control Logic
The control logic block contains buffers that store the input and status byte values. Through the I/O expander bus interface, the controller reads these bytes and processes the digital input information.
